Dieting is the most important thing to do in order to manage blood sugar levels. There are so many ways to manage your diet. The plate method is the easiest and effective way to manage weight for Diabetics. The important thing is to increase non starchy vegetables.

The plate method: Mark a straight line at the middle of your plate. Now you have two halves. Divide one half into two equal sections. Fill the undivided half with non starchy vegetables. Fill the quarter of one section with starchy foods. Fill the other quarter with meat and meat substitutes. You can incorporate low fat or non fat milk in a meal. Also include a small or medium portion of a fruit. Fruits can be incorporated in a meal or use it as a snack between meals.

Non starchy vegetables: e.g green vegetables, cabbage, cucumbers, lettuce, brocolli, cauliflower etc. Starchy foods: e.g whole grains, pasta, sweet potatoes, green peas etc. Meat and meat substitutes: e.g skinless chicken/turkey, fish, sea food, lean beef/pork, tofu, eggs, soya e.t.c Fruits: e.g oranges, pears, apples, bananas e.t.c This is just a general overview but diets can change depending on blood sugar levels, personal preference, frequency of eating and also availability of different foods. Always check your blood glucose and adjust your diet appropriately. Starving yourself will only make it worse especially for the overweight or obese.
